Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: 2 1/2 cups
- Granulated sugar: 3/4 cup
- Baking powder: 2 1/2 teaspoons
- Baking soda: 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
- Ground nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon
- Sour cream: 1 cup
- Large egg: 1
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
- Step 2: In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream and egg until smooth.
- Step 3: Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Step 4: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 1/2-inch thick circle. Use a donut cutter to cut out donuts.
- Step 5: Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Step 6: Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack to cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar or glaze as desired.
Notes
- Store cooled donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, as they are best enjoyed fresh.
- To revive day-old donuts, warm them briefly in a low oven or microwave for a few seconds.
- Serve these tangy donuts with a simple lemon glaze to complement the sour cream flavor.
- Don't overmix the dough; a slightly lumpy batter will result in tender, cake-like donuts.
