Ingredients
- Apples (Gala, Honeycrisp, or Fuji recommended): 3 medium, about 1.5 lbs
- All-purpose flour: 100 grams (¾ cup plus 1 tablespoon)
- Granulated sugar: 75 grams (⅓ cup plus 1 tablespoon)
- Eggs: 2 large
- Milk: 120 ml (½ cup)
- Butter, melted: 40 grams (3 tablespoons)
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
- Pinch of salt: 1/4 teaspoon
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 8-inch round cake pan.
- Step 2: Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. The thinner the slices, the better the texture.
- Step 3: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk until just combined and smooth. Do not overmix.
- Step 4: Add the sliced apples to the batter and gently toss to coat them evenly. Make sure all the apple slices are submerged in the batter.
- Step 5: Pour the apple mixture into the prepared cake pan and spread evenly.
- Step 6: Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar (optional) before serving.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- For a warm treat, gently reheat slices in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.
- A dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream elevates this simple cake into a delightful dessert.
- For the most 'invisible' effect, use a mandoline or a very sharp knife to achieve paper-thin apple slices.
