Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: 1 1/2 cups
- Granulated sugar: 1 1/2 cups
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: 1/4 cup
- Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil: 1/2 cup
- Buttermilk: 1 cup
- Red food coloring: 2 tablespoons
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Step 3: In a separate bowl, combine the vegetable oil, buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Step 4: Pour batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
- Step 5: Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares and serving. A cream cheese frosting can be added on top, if desired.
Notes
- To prevent sticking, line your baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy brownie removal.
- Store leftover brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for longer storage.
- For an extra touch of decadence, warm individual brownie squares in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Don't overmix the batter after combining wet and dry ingredients – a few streaks of flour are okay, as overmixing can lead to tough brownies.
