Flaky, golden puff pastry embracing savory smoked turkey, melted Swiss, and zesty Dijon. These quick stacks are perfect appetizers or lunch bites. Full instructions and nutritional facts provided.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  • 8 slices high-quality smoked deli turkey
  • 4 slices Swiss or Provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (or honey mustard, for sweetness)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon Everything Bagel seasoning
  • Pinch of freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 teaspoon of water to create an egg wash; set aside.
  2. Step 2: Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, slice the pastry sheet into 8 equal rectangles (these will form the bases and lids for 4 stacks).
  3. Step 3: Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard onto the surface of four of the pastry rectangles (the bases). Stack the fillings onto these bases: layer one slice of cheese, followed by two slices of smoked turkey, then top with a second slice of cheese.
  4. Step 4: Place the remaining four pastry rectangles (the lids) on top of the filled bases. Crimp the edges tightly using a fork to seal the turkey and cheese filling inside the stack. Transfer the stacks to the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Step 5: Brush the tops and sides of the stacks generously with the prepared egg wash. Sprinkle the tops with black pepper and the Everything Bagel seasoning.
  6. Step 6: Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, deeply golden brown, and crispy. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For short-term storage, seal completely cooled stacks in an airtight container for up to 2 days; they will lose some crispness but remain delicious.
  • If reheating, avoid the microwave; instead, use a preheated oven or toaster oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes to bring back that flaky, crispy exterior.
  • Elevate the savory flavor profile by serving these warm stacks alongside a dollop of sweet cherry pepper relish or a small bowl of apricot jam for a delightful sweet and salty contrast.
  • For an extra flavor boost and superior lift, chill the assembled stacks in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before applying the egg wash and seasoning, ensuring the pastry stays cold before baking.
