Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (13.8 oz) refrigerated pizza dough
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- Coarse sea salt (optional)
- 1 large egg, beaten (optional, for shinier pretzels)
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
- Step 2: In a large bowl, mix together the water and baking soda until dissolved. Set aside.
- Step 3: Unroll the pizza dough and cut it into approximately 1-inch pieces. Roll each piece into a small rope about 4-5 inches long. Form each rope into a pretzel shape or a simple knot.
- Step 4: Dip each pretzel bite into the baking soda water mixture, ensuring it's fully submerged for a few seconds. This gives the pretzels their characteristic chewy texture. Place the dipped pretzels on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg (optional). Sprinkle lightly with coarse sea salt, if desired.
- Step 5: Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Step 6: While the pretzels are baking, melt the butter in a small bowl. In another bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Once the pretzels are out of the oven, brush them with the melted butter and then immediately toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until well coated. Serve warm.
Notes
- Store cooled pretzel bites in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, though they're best enjoyed fresh.
- For a quick reheat, microwave the pretzel bites for 10-15 seconds or warm them in a 350°F oven for a few minutes to restore their soft texture.
- Serve these sweet treats with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate sauce for an extra decadent dessert.
- To prevent the pretzels from becoming soggy, don't over-saturate them in the baking soda solution – a quick dip is all they need for that authentic pretzel flavor.
